(MARATHON, Florida)– A failed migration attempt has left 4 dead and 5 missing in the Florida Keys on Sunday, according to Coast Guard authorities.

According to officials, the passengers were traveling aboard a homemade boat that capsized about 50 miles from Little Torch Key.

Rescuers saved 9 of at least 18 passengers aboard the vessel and immediately recovered one of the deceased on the scene.

Some of the passengers were wearing lifejackets which, authorities say, was the only reason they survived the ordeal.

The Coast Guard has not released any information about where the migrants were from.
