(NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FL) — Authorities in Miami have arrested the suspect believed to have shot a Miami-Dade police detective who was investigating a carjacking.
20-year-old Gabrial Gongora was taken into custody on Tuesday for the shooting of detective Ricaurte Lugo Monday afternoon.
Officials say Detective Lugo was working with the Miami-Dade Robbery Intervention Detail unit when he spotted a black Volkswagen that was believed to have been stolen, leaving the Heaven Lake Estates Trailer Park in Miramar.
The deputy called for backup as Gongora drove away.
Deputy Lugo later spotted the vehicle near Northwest 186th Street and 67th Avenue in Miami Gardens and began following it.
The Gongora pulled out a gun and opened fire on the detective, shooting him in the face.
Lugo was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center where he remains in stable condition.
Investigators found the vehicle and a spent gun shell at Gongora’s home and arrested him.
Gongora confessed to the shooting and was taken into custody.
He is facing first-degree attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
