AMC theatres will soon begin accepting bitcoin and other cryptocurrency as a form of payment.

The movie theater chain announced the change during a phone meeting on Monday.

CEO Adam Aron, says that they are currently in the developmental stages, however, customers should be able to use their cryptocurrency to pay for movies and snacks  at it’s U.S theaters online by next year.

“I’ve had to learn more in the past six months about blockchain and cryptocurrency than I learned about it in the entire decade before that,” said Aron.

Aron also reported that the chain will also move into accepting Apple and Google pay as well:

“Since we had to do the IT programming to accept bitcoin anyway, we are simultaneously writing the code right now to accept Apple Pay and Google Pay for online purchases at our US theaters also.”

Investors seem to be happy about the development. AMC shares jumped 5.3%  just hours after the announcement.

Amazon may be the next company to jump on the bandwagon. In a interview with CNN Business, an Amazon spokesperson told the publication that they believe crypto is the future:

“We believe the future will be built on new technologies that enable modern, fast and inexpensive payments, and hope to bring that future to Amazon customers as soon as possible.”
