A 9-year-old girl has been charged with assault after authorities say she beat a 4-year-old to death with a broom.

Authorities in Mobile, Alabama confirmed the charges on Monday.

Officials say responded to a home on Jacob Drive to a situation involving an unresponsive child.

When they arrived to the home, they found the 4-year-old unresponsive and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Both children were under the care of 53-year-old Yolanda Coale, who refused to speak to police about the incident until she was taken into custody.

The woman then told authorities that she was woken up by the two children screaming and crying. When she got up, she found the 9-year-old beating her 4-year-old brother with a broom stick.

Authorities also noted that the boy had signs that indicate long-term abuse on his body but it’s unclear how he got those injuries.

Coale has been charged with aggravated child abuse and is being held on a $150,000 bond.

The 9-year-old has been charged with assault.
