Police in Margate are reporting that an 82-year-old man was fatally shot by police after the man was said to have been waving a gun around and pointing it at several people.

The incident was reported on Sunday around 12:45 p.m. near Northwest First Street and Rock Island Road.

Officials say the man, Jose Antonio Suarez, was waving his gun at people and periodically shooting it into the ground.

Suarez was told repeatedly to drop his weapon but refused to do so.

Authorities were eventually forced to open fire on him when he began pointing the gun at them.

Official rendered aide to Suarez until Margate Fire Rescue crews, however, Suarez was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers or civilians were injured during the incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident as is protocol when an officer discharges their weapon.
