Authorities are reporting that a 4-year-old girl who went missing in 2019 was found alive inside of a New York home.
The Saugerties Police Department says that they located Paislee Shultis hidden under the stairs of a home after receiving a tip regarding her whereabouts on Monday night.
Officers say they located the child after about an hour of searching, inside of a hidden makeshift room under a staircase leading to the basement.
Detective Erik Thiele says he noticed something off about the staircase and after shining a light on them, he saw a blanket.
” Detectives used a halogen tool to remove several of the wooden steps, and that is when detectives saw a pair of tiny feet,” police said in a statement on Tuesday. “After removing several more steps, the child and her abductor were discovered within. The space was small, cold, and wet.”
Authorities say they suspect the child’s “non-custodial parents” of taking the child and previously followed leads that the child was at the home but they had little jurisdiction:
“During some of the follow ups to the Fawn Road location, authorities were permitted limited access into the residence to look around for the child, by both Kirk Shultis Sr and Jr. … knowing the child and her abductor were hidden within the house and would not be found.,” police said.
The Shultis’ were charged with one count each of felony of custodial interference in the first degree and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.
The child’s mother Kimberly Cooper, was charged with custodial interference in the second degree and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.
