Two Lakeland area men have been arrested after a three-year-old in their care found a gun and accidently shot his two- year-old sister.

23-year-old Kevonte’ Wilson told Polk County police that he and some friends gathered at a house to watch tv on Friday when the incident occurred.

Wilson says he placed the gun in between the couch cushions in an effort to hide the weapon from the children, however, the three-year-old eventually found the gun and accidently shot his sister.

Three men in the home then jumped into a vehicle and attempted to drive the child to an area hospital but during the drive, became involved in a vehicle accident with injuries.

A good Samaritan who stopped to offer assistance, then took the two-year-old and one adult to the hospital while the others waited for the police.

Wilson was arrested and is now facing charges of failing to safely store a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of marijuana.  Sheriff’s Judd said Wilson could face other counts depending on how the situation concludes.

The home owner 24-year- old Chad Berrien, was also arrested. He has been charged with possession of marijuana and maintaining a house for drug use.

The three-year-old was initially placed in the care of the Department of Children and Families but has since been placed in the care of his grandmother.
