The father of a 3-year-old boy could face charges after his son accidently shot his mother.
The incident was reported in a Chicago suburb on Saturday around 8:30 p.m.
Authorities say that the family was sitting inside of a car in the parking lot of a Food 4 Less store when the incident occurred.
According to the report, the child was seated in the backseat of the vehicle, while the mother was in the front passenger seat, and the father was seated in the driver’s seat.
At some point, the child gained access to his father’s gun and fired the weapon.
“He somehow got ahold of the gun and began playing with it in a playful manner, pointed the gun and fired the shot,” Dolton Police Robert Collins Jr. said.
The mother identified as 22-year-old Daejah Bennett was rushed to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck.
She, however, did not make it.
Officials say that at this time, there is no evidence that indicates that the father shot the mother of knew that their son was holding the weapon.
“We do not have anything to indicate that the dad fired the weapon so the avenue we are pursuing is that the gun was his responsibility,” Collins said.
It was reported, however, the the father did not own the weapon legally.
Investigators say they are currently working with prosecutors in Cook County to determine what charges the father should face.
