A mother and a father are recovering in the hospital after their 2-year-old got ahold of a gun and shot both of them.

The incident was reported just before 8 a.m. Wednesday in West Bath, Maine.

Officials say the boy’s parents were in their room when the child picked up the gun off of the nightstand and shot both of them.

The mother was said to have been shot in the leg while the father was shot in the head. Both where taken to an area hospital where they are expected to survive.

Officials also reported that the child was struck in the face by the recoil of the weapon.

The couple has a 3-week-old son who is currently in their care of a grandparent.

The grandparent was said to have lived in the home with the couple, however, was not home at the time of the incident.
