(TANZANIA)– At least 19 people died after a passenger plane crash-landed in Lake Victoria while trying to reach a nearby airport in Tanzania Sunday.
According to the country’s prime minister, Kassim Majaliwa, thirty-nine passengers, including an infant, and four crew members were aboard when the small plane went down around 8:53 a.m.
Twenty-six were rescued from the water and hospitalized, and the other 19 perished in the collision.
“We are yet to confirm the number of fatalities from the scene of the accident,” said a spokesperson for Precision Air, the Tanzanian airline company that owned the aircraft.
“We have managed to save quite a number of people,” Kagera province police commander William Mwampaghale said in a statement.
Mwampaghale went on to say, “When the aircraft was about 100 meters (328 feet) midair, it encountered problems and bad weather. It was raining and the plane plunged into the water,”
