Lyft driver fataly hits utility worker while on the clock in Palm Beach County


(PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLA) — A Lyft driver transporting two passengers struck and killed a utility worker while distracted Tuesday afternoon, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident occurred in the 3000 block of Southern Boulevard in West Palm Beach around 4 p.m.

The Lyft operator, driving a 2020 Chevy Malibu, took their eyes off the road and drifted to the left, coming in fatal contact with Julio Angel Flores Figueroa, 55, of West Palm Beach.

Figueroa was completing routine maintenance and marking utilities in the center median when the Lyft driver collided with him.

The Lyft driver suffered minor injuries and Figueroa was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lyft released a statement regarding the accident, saying
“We are heartbroken by this incident. Our hearts are with the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We have removed the driver from the Lyft platform and stand ready to assist law enforcement however we can.”

The Lyft driver has not been identified by name, nor have they been arrested.
