KEARNEY, NE– A 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy are now in state custody after they led State troopers on a high-speed vehicle chase last Monday.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Interstate 80 near mile marker 276.
State troopers say they noticed a Nissan Pathfinder traveling east at approximately 35 miles per hour and conducted a traffic stop.
The driver accelerated and fled, leading troopers on a chase reaching speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.
Another trooper was able to deploy stop sticks to slow the vehicle down.
The driver struck the sticks, then exited the interstate at the Shelton interchange and began traveling northbound at slower speeds.
A trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Authorities identified the driver as a 13-year-old girl from Colorado. Her passenger was an 11-year-old, also from Colorado.
Officials reported that they found a firearm and a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.
Both children are now in protective custody.
