(LAKELAND, FLA) — A 13-year-old girl was taken into police custody after she used a megaphone to shout “my body my choice” during an abortion rights protest in Florida.
The incident occurred at Munn Park in Lakeland on July 4th.
The child’s mother reported that officers became irritated with the group’s use of microphones and megaphones and targeted her daughter:
“We had people share their stories about how overturning Roe v. Wade affected them and how they feel that the decision is wrong,” said the girl’s mother, Lauren Johnson, in a viral TikTok video. “They were standing up and using microphones.”
Two officers escorted the child out of the protest with her mother following close behind.
She is now being charged with a second-degree misdemeanor for a noise ordinance violation.
On July 1st a noise ordinance law went into effect in Florida.
Officers are now allowed to ticket those making an excessive amount of noise.
While the law does appear to target those in motor vehicles, Attorney David Haas says that he believes the child was taken into custody due to the new law.
