A 12-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a police vehicle that was on it’s way to a call.

The incident occurred on Monday around 6:00 p.m. in Red Oak, Iowa.

Authorities say a 22-year-old police officer was responding to a fire when the 12-year-old girl reportedly ” ran into the roadway.”

Iowa State Patrol reported that the officer had both his lights and the siren on at the time of the crash.

The family of the child told investigators that the child was on her way to the store to buy snacks with a Christmas card she received.

It is unclear how fast the officer was going at the time of the crash.

The officer has been place on leave while the Iowa State Police investigates.
