A 10-year-old girl is now in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families after she reportedly shot and killed a woman who was fighting with her mother.
The incident occurred at an apartment complex in Orlando on May 30th.
Witnesses told police that the child and her mother were outside the apartment when an argument occurred between the child’s mother and the victim.
The victim’s boyfriend told police that during the argument, the girl’s mother hit his girlfriend and his girlfriend hit her back. He then broke up the fight but his girlfriend tried to “re-engage.”
The boyfriend then told police that he noticed the child pointing a gun at his girlfriend and then heard “one or two” gunshots and the child say “she shouldn’t have hit my momma.”
The victim, 41-year-old Lashun Denise Rodgers, was rushed to an area hospital where she later died.
The mother was taken into custody.
State Attorney for Orange and Osceola Counties Monique H. Worrell is currently reviewing the case:
“We want to be clear in stating that no charging decision has been made by our office,” the state attorney’s statement said, adding the incident was “one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career.”
