(MARTIN COUNTY, Florida)– A girl from Palm City fought off an aggressive shark at a beach in Hobe Sound on Sunday, according to the Jupiter Island Public Safety Department.

Jasmine Carney, 10, along with her grandmother and younger brother, were at the beach Sunday afternoon and while Carney was in the surf she felt something sharp latch onto her foot.

Carney was able to free herself and ran over to her grandmother, who observed her bloody foot and immediately summoned lifeguards.

After the lifeguards applied first aid to the wound, Carney was airlifted to Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach.

Carney suffered deep lacerations to her ankle from the shark attack and required surgery, which was a success.

Carney should make a full recovery within two months, according to her doctors.
