(TAMPA, FL)– A 10-year-old who was riding on a scooter with an adult has died after falling into a busy street.
The incident occurred on Nov. 10th outside of a gas station located at 3605 W Hillsborough Ave.
Authorities say the adult 37-year-old Yordanis Leyva, was intoxicated at the time and made a wide turn into the gas station around 6:40 p.m.
The turn caused both Leyva and the child to fall off of the scooter and into oncoming traffic.
Both the child and Leyva were run over by a driver who did not see them in enough time to stop.
The child and Leyva were transported to an area hospital where the child died.
Investigating officers determined that Leyva was at fault for the accident and that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
He has been charged with DUI Manslaughter and driving with a suspended license involving death.
At this time, Leyva remains in the hospital with serious injuries.
