
(CABO ROJO, Puerto Rico)– One US Customs and Board Patrol agent has died and two others are injured after they were shot at while approaching a suspicious boat.
The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. about 14 miles off the coast of Cabo Rojo Thursday.
Authorities say the agents were responding to the area after receiving a call about a suspected smuggling operation underway.
When the Customs boat approached the suspicious boat, they immediately came under fire.
Three agents were struck by gunfire and airlifted to a trauma center in Puerto Rico.
One person has since passed away. Two other agents are still hospitalized, however, their conditions are unknown.
No other information about the case has been made public including where the boat is believed to have originated from or what was being smuggled.
