(CABO ROJO, Puerto Rico)– One US Customs and Board Patrol agent has died and two others are injured after they were shot at while approaching a suspicious boat.

The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. about 14 miles off the coast of Cabo Rojo Thursday.

Authorities say the agents were responding to the area after receiving a call about a suspected smuggling operation underway.

When the Customs boat approached the suspicious boat, they immediately came under fire.

Three agents were struck by gunfire and airlifted to a trauma center in Puerto Rico.

One person has since passed away. Two other agents are still hospitalized, however, their conditions are unknown.
