One officer is seriously injured but expected to survive after an overnight domestic dispute turned into a gunfight and a hostage situation involving children.

The incident occurred at the Westbrook Apartments near the Universal Orlando Resort.

According to the report, a woman called 911 to report that she needed assistance after her boyfriend beat her up.  When officers arrived at the apartment they were immediately met with gunfire.  At least one officer was injured during the exchange and rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center with “very significant injuries.”

Authorities returned fire, however, they are unsure if the suspect was injured during the exchange.

Officers have since learned that the suspect barricaded himself inside of the apartment with four children, ages 1, 7, 10 and 12.

The children are believed to belong to both the suspect and his girlfriend.

Neighbors in surrounding apartments were relocated to a hotel during the standoff.

So far the name of the suspect or the injured officer has not been released.

This is a developing story.
