A five-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after being dragged from her home by a bear.

The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. in Colorado. According to the report, the young girl’s mother was woken up by screams outside of the home. When she went to investigate, she found her young daughter being dragged away from their Grand Junction home by a bear. That’s when the mother said she screamed and the bear dropped her daughter and ran off.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

While at the hospital the child told her mom she went outside after hearing a noise she thought was coming from her dog, that’s when she encountered the bear.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials along with the help of federal wildlife services employees tracked down and euthanized the bear.

According to a statement from the officials, due to a lack of food in the wild, the bears have been attracted to neighborhoods where they search through garbage cans, homes, and cars for food.
